Chapter Eleven

Just when Cara had begun to put Mark out of her mind for the day, David showed up. A wave of guilt swept over her when she saw him. He smiled and gave her a half-wave as he headed into the coffeehouse and behind the counter.

“Hi, Cara.” He put his arm around her shoulders and squeezed.

“Hi,” she managed and tugged out of his grasp. Why was it feast or famine when it came to boys? She could never get a date when she really wanted one and when she didn’t, they were crawling out of the woodwork. Typical.

“I was wondering if you’re free later for dinner?” he asked.

Glancing his way, she noticed he was looking at the schedule. He would know what time she got off work and she couldn’t lie about it. Damn the luck.

“Uh…” she began.

“Because I thought we had a very nice time before and I’d really like to see you again.”

Why couldn’t she say yes? Because she nearly screwed his brother in the storeroom, and her hormones were telling her she wanted Mark over David any old day. Oh, David was nice enough, she knew. But Mark…wow. Mark made her want to do things with a man she had never considered. He was the stuff fantasies were made of and she wanted it. She wanted him.

Her offer to try and use David to get information out of him, she thought, had to be rescinded. Because she just couldn’t do it. She couldn’t play both sides of the fence and pretend she liked the man when she really didn’t.

“I’m kind of busy later,” she said at last.

“Oh.” He looked crestfallen.

She felt like a heel. “I’m sorry, David. It’s just that I have other plans. My girlfriend and I are going to dinner.” Oh, that was good. That sounded plausible enough, right? He’d believe that one.

“Okay. Some other time?” he asked and gave her a winning smile.

“Sure!” Even though she knew she didn’t mean it.
